On a 20degC the intake temps got up to 35deg - you’ll have to trust us, but that’s really impressive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eFor HZJ105 running the 1HZ engine we suggest our smaller core (645x240x65) to reduce the heat loading on the radiator. While it is not as effective as our larger core, most 1HZ aren’t pushed too hard and this core will easily cater for almost all turbo 1HZ builds. This core is designed to fit around the condenser pipe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eAir can be felt strongly pulling through the intercooler 50-80mm in front of the core, while idling on startup. To continue to have the air being pulled through while engine temps are low (and the fan hub normally free wheels) some extra fluid can be added to the viscous coupling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe early 100 series didn’t have any power steering cooler pipes out front and most owners leave it like that. The standard one is the same as is used in the 80 series kits and we get reports that transmission temps have dropped after fitting our intercooler and trans cooler. As well as the trans cooler being very good we also expect the transmission can hold the gear for longer and stay in lock-up, which reduces heat being made.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eFrom the pictures you can see we have chosen to have them in front of the intercooler. The auto cooler bracket has six options with three different positions for either of the two transmission coolers. A number of years ago, a friend needed massive cooling for his offroad race vehicle, which was auto and running a high powered FTE engine - in my 1 ride in this vehicle out the back of “the pines”, as well as being fast in and out of the corners, I just thought how hard he was on the transmission. He asked for a large (550x300x76mm) bar and plate intercooler, which he sealed the outlets and ran transmission fluid through it. After a few races he decided he needed more cooling so we supplied the 45,000BTU transmission cooler above, which he claimed made a big difference. A couple years later, he reported that at some point, due to mounting and the weight of the fluid filled intercooler it formed a crack, so he had to bypass it during a race and it made no difference to the overall cooling as the properly designed and suitably sized stacked plate core did such a good job. At that point the much larger bar and plate cooler was never refitted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eideal operating temperature\u003c\/strong\u003e for \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.summitracing.com\/search\/part-type\/transmission-fluid\/transmission\/automatic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eautomatic transmission fluid\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e is somewhere between 80 and 110 degrees C. Here’s what can happen above this range:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul data-rte-list=\"default\"\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eAt approximately 115 degrees C, important additives begin to cook in the automatic transmission fluid (ATF). The result is the formation of varnish inside the transmission.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eAt approximately 125 degrees C, internal transmission seals, which are often manufactured from a polyacrylate material, begin to harden. Carbon forms in the oil and your effectively killed the transmission. Our front mount kit cooling capability is greater than all other kits we have tested so the improvements in torque and power will exceed other results. This normally equates to 90rwkw and 110rwkw, respectively, after drivetrain power loss.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eOur first released PDI Landcruiser HDJ79 Front Mount intercooler kit had a 600x240x65mm core and now we have managed to fit a 76mm thick core behind the factory grill (with a bit of slimming to the plastic), which for many who have considered the custom install to be impossible. The pipework is also 2 1\/2” stainless steel for improved flow and durability. Note stock levels of the 76mm core have been depleted and we have 65mm cores\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eInitial testing of the system was with an upgraded Gturbo Badboy turbo, tuning module, Safari ARMax snorkel and running \u003cstrong\u003estandard injectors\u003c\/strong\u003e and standard airbox. Dyno testing with this configuration has resulted in a max power of \u003cstrong\u003e186.4kW\u003c\/strong\u003e at the wheels with a low 20psi boost. We also managed to achieve 18psi at 1550rpm with maximum torque of \u003cstrong\u003e668Nm at (only) 1850rpm\u003c\/strong\u003e. There is no doubt this is has to be one of the best combinations for a \"mildly modified\" 1HDFTE that boasts only 122kW at the engine (100rwkw) in factory form.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eOur next step was to install \u003cstrong\u003e+30% injectors\u003c\/strong\u003e. There is a step change in performance with this upgrade and needs a retune. With a few changes we managed to get \u003cstrong\u003e246rwkw\u003c\/strong\u003e (330hp at the wheels) and \u003cstrong\u003e900nm\u003c\/strong\u003e so an excellent result.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe current setup is running \u003cstrong\u003e+70% injectors\u003c\/strong\u003e and has 311rwkw and over \u003cstrong\u003e1000nm\u003c\/strong\u003e. The 76mm core will make that even easier, with larger end tanks and better internal flow for high boost.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eTo make space for the intercooler core, the air conditioner piping has to be rerouted. The components to do this are included in the kit and the task is simple enough. Spacers are provided to space the radiator back at the top. Then the condenser has a few spacers and longer bolts to allow that to also be pushed back so that nothing touches. The condenser stays in place and flexible lines take care of the rest of the relocating. Initial testing on two different cruisers resulted in the fitter doing the regassing comment on how well the system was performing. All these results were using a 500mm wide core.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWe have done some more testing of the current 600mm wide core now that we can apply more load.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWhen working hard the turbo outlet temp was pushed to 260degC and post intercooler temps were down to 70degC - a \u003cstrong\u003e190degC reduction\u003c\/strong\u003e. The results below show how effective the PDI front mount is compared to top mounted configuration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eCompare this to one of the mid size current top mount setups that had turbo outlet temp of 130degC and post intercooler temp of 90degC - \u003cstrong\u003ea 40degC reduction\u003c\/strong\u003e. We do not use the intercooler to absorb the shocks of bonnet bounce.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWe maximise the size of the core behind the grill opening and have been seeing results far more impressive than the smaller core should be producing. Our custom cast end tanks were designed to give us maximum width. While it is possible to make the core taller by going down further, an examination of the space will show that a 40mm portion of the extended core is blocked off from behind by the crossmember. The area that goes below the crossmember is then also blocked from the front by the lower painted panel and additionally it is unlikely to have any cooling from the air being pulled by the fan from behind. This portion of intercooler which does not see the same cooling as the upper part can have the affect of diluting the air charge with air that has not been cooled as much and therefore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eCast end tanks are used as airflow will be smoother, especially while going between the tank and welded pipe. No welds means a stronger tank that won’t bust open along the seems at high boost.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWe have chosen to go through the front panel down low as this is the simplest penetration (with an existing hole 38mm diameter) and has limited impact on the structure. The 75\/79 series six cylinder radiator is mainly supported from the top mount so strength here is important.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWe have seen custom installs that may look great, but no only do they go through next to the radiator mounts, they also cut away a large portion of the lower crossmember, which is a major structural component. For these custom setups, although the rear of the crossmember is kept, there is no flow through a 50mm horizontal section of the core as it is blocked from the front and the back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eOur stainless pipework is all one piece with no welding. The stainless routing goes over and points down at the turbo outlet so we can use a straight connection in silicon. This is on the cold side of the intercooler so will still allow cool air to reach the condenser under most driving conditions. We suggest not running any other brand of thermo fan, regardless of rating.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhy go front mounted? \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eToyota placed the intercooler on the top of the engine since it met the requirements they had for the standard power ratings on these engines for most users. It also helped to keep production and assembly costs lower. It was not chosen as the most effective solution.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWhere efficiency is required to achieve good results (from smaller engines) manufacturers delivered the vehicles with front mounting intercoolers such as Hilux, Prado, D-Max, Colorado, Ford Ranger and many others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWith the standard top mount intercooler, the 200 series performance suffers with increased ambient temperature and load. While towing, the constant higher boost produces more heat than can be dissipated by a top mounted intercooler. At low speed the problem is worse, as the design of the front ducting for the factory intercooler is sealed to below the top of the grill so hot air from the engine is trapped around the core until you start moving. Placing any obstruction (such as a bullbar) in front of the entry at the top of the grill additionally affects getting any cool air moving over the core.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWe've never heard of a top mounted radiator and that’s because the cold air isn't there. Testing, performed on a VDJ70 series, running the same engine and intercooler as the 200 series and tuned to around 150rwkw (similar to the 200 series) showed that (at full load) the factory top mount was able to cool the pressurised inlet air charge from around 180-190degC down to 88degC. A quality aftermarket top mount further brought this temp down to 75degC - a 15% drop in maximum temperature. On the same vehicle, our PDI front mount was tested and the temperature reached a maximum of 47degC, which is a 46% drop in temperature, being over 3x more effective than a quality aftermarket upgraded top mounted intercooler. The benefit of front mounting is even greater with further power increases as the boost is higher and the heat to be removed increases.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe 76mm thick core is huge, utilising the large frontal area on a full size Landcruiser to maximise cooling, improve air fuel ratios and drop your EGT. The setup is ideal for safely optimising your performance aims or for towing applications and requires minimal modification for installation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eThe kit brings the air charge from the two turbos into the drivers side and runs across through the intercooler. The outlet has a single feed back into the engine bay to go through either the OEM twin throttle bodies or our single entry design. The factory setup has two throttle bodies facing left and right which go into the factory top mounted intercooler. The dual entry option connect into both of these, but splits the outlet from the intercooler. The single entry removes the butterflies and the section they bolt to, which also has the feed from the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation emissions system) so the EGR input becomes blocked off with a plate and will not flow any exhaust gases into the intake. For all 200 series and post 2013 VDJ79\/76\/78 the two throttle bodies must be plugged back in to prevent the engine throwing codes and de-rating the power. For early 70 series they can be left off the engine with an ECU reflash to clear the fault from them not being connected.
