Toyota Landcruiser 1HD-FTE Unichip X PreTuned (wire in)

The Unichip Uni-X is a piggyback tuning module that sits between your factory ECU and the engine, intercepting the signals the ECU sends and re-shaping them in real time. It is how you get properly tuned power out of a 1HD-FTE - an engine whose factory ECU cannot be flashed or remapped.

We build the turbos these tunes are written for. GTurbo designs and manufactures the G333, G380 and G400Ti in-house, and we have been tuning 1HD-FTE Landcruisers on our own hardware for years. When you buy a pre-tuned Unichip from us, the turbo and the tune come out of the same workshop. Nobody is guessing how our compressor behaves on boost.

Three ways to buy

• Unichip + harness, no tune - the hardware on its own, for customers running their own tuner or booking in with us later.
• Pre-tuned - we write the map to your exact setup before it leaves us. Wire it in and drive.
• Pre-tuned + 5 Map Select - the same tune, plus a dash-mounted switch giving you five separate maps on demand.

What the Uni-X does

Coolant temperature protection. The Uni-X reads coolant temperature from the ECU and automatically winds the tune back when the engine is cold, or when it is running hotter than it should be. It is built into the module, it runs on its own, and it needs nothing from you. It simply protects the motor in the background.

Five maps on a switch. With 5 Map Select fitted you get five distinct tunes, changeable while you drive:

1. Power - everything your setup will safely give.
2. Tow - leaner air-fuel ratio with strong mid-range torque, built to hold temperature on a long climb with weight behind you.
3. Economy - leaned right out for touring and highway kilometres.
4. Near-stock - a quiet map for lending the truck out, for valet, or for running in fresh hardware.
5. Immobiliser - the engine will not start or run. An anti-theft layer most 100 Series simply do not have.

Boost is adjustable on each map independently, so the tow map and the power map can run completely different boost targets.

Builds we tune for

Tell us what is on the truck and we write the map around it. Setups that come through our workshop every week:

• Stock turbo, 3in exhaust - HDJ100 with the factory intercooler, or HDJ79 without. The cheapest genuine gain available on a 1HD-FTE and the most common first step.
• Stock turbo, 3in exhaust, upgraded intercooler and airbox - more headroom on exhaust gas temperatures and noticeably better sustained towing.
• GTurbo G333 or G380, 3in exhaust, intercooler - our ball-bearing cores, tuned by the people who built them.
• GTurbo G400Ti, highflow injectors, upgraded clutch or valve body - the top of the 1HD-FTE range.
• Automatic-specific builds - tuned around the A750F, including vehicles running an upgraded valve body.

Running something else - a UFI, a GMT highflow, a hybrid of your own - put it in the tuning form and we will tune for it.

Fitment

Toyota Landcruiser fitted with the 1HD-FTE engine, 1998 to 2007:

• HDJ100 Series wagon - automatic and manual
• HDJ79 Series ute and troop carrier - manual

Not certain which engine you have? The 1HD-FTE is the 24-valve, electronically controlled 4.2L six. If your Cruiser runs a cable-operated injector pump it is a 1HD-FT or a 1HZ and needs a different solution - call us and we will point you the right way rather than sell you the wrong part.

What we need from you

Every pre-tuned module is written for one specific vehicle, so we need to know what we are tuning. After checkout you will receive a downloadable Unichip Tuning Form. Fill it in and send it back with:

• Year and model - HDJ100 or HDJ79
• Transmission - 4-speed auto, 5-speed auto or 5-speed manual
• Every modification on the engine: turbo, exhaust, intercooler, injectors, airbox, clutch, valve body
• What the truck does - touring, towing, station work, weekends

The more detail you give us, the closer the map lands first go.

Lead time

Pre-tuned modules are written to order. Allow up to 10 business days from the day we receive your completed tuning form. Working to a trip or a build deadline? Tell us when you order and we will do our best to meet it. The no-tune option ships immediately.

Fitting

The Uni-X is a wire-in module - it is not plug-and-play, and it needs to be wired into the factory loom. Plenty of our customers fit their own with basic auto-electrical skills and a multimeter. If you would rather not, any auto electrician can handle it, or book the truck in with us.

Common questions

I already have a chip fitted. Can I run both?
No - remove the old unit first. Two piggyback modules fighting over the same signals is a fast way to an expensive problem.

Can the tune be changed later?
Yes. The Unichip is fully re-programmable. If you add a turbo, injectors or an intercooler down the track, the module does not need replacing - it just needs a new map.

Do I need a dyno session?
Not for a pre-tuned module. It arrives ready to run. A dyno session will always extract the last few percent, and we are happy to do that if you are within reach of us.

Will it suit an automatic?
Yes. We tune a great many automatic 100 Series, including vehicles running upgraded valve bodies. Tell us the transmission on the form.
